I know we're supposed to be rethinking globalization, but I have become a major sucker for Coca-Cola. Between the glass bottles, the need to be refreshed (seriously, it's hot), and the sugar instead of corn syrup, I just can't resist. And since we actually have no idea if it's actually made with sugar or not, it's definitley the cold refreshing appeal that has made me addicted. I justify it with the fact that 1)everything is a paradox, and 2) cultural assilimilation is more important than Western self-rigteousness.
But it's not simply just Western self-righteousness because Coca actually does some effed-up s***. Of the three water bottle companies I saw that provided water in Dar, two of them were owned by Coke - Disani and Kilmanjaro. This is where the tap water is unsafe to drink or brush your teeth, even for people who live there. And it's not like you can sip it once in a while to build immunity. There is no immunity for cholera (a maxium we had to repeat several times in group meetings). Bottled water was only introduced here a few years ago. The tap water has not always been unsafe. Neoliberalization, it guts government services, and makes us all addicted to coke! I think they make more money off water than soda.
